Accra Academy receives support from Happy FM

Hosts of the all new Happy Morning Show (#HappyHMS) on behalf of the station Happy 98.9FM, have led the donation to Accra Academy following the fire incident earlier in the week.

As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, an appeal was made by the hosts on the Weekend Edition of the Happy Morning Show to support victims of the Accra Academy fire disaster.

The Happy Morning Show donated some provisions, toiletries and other relief items to the affected students.

Chief Executive of Global Media Alliance, Mr. Ernest Boateng lauding the initiative taken by the Happy Morning Show team said, “We couldn’t just sit and look on unconcerned given the circumstances. Just talking about the issue on radio was not enough. And that is why the team decided to take a step in lending a helping hand to those who suffered from the fire. We are also grateful to those who have sent in their donations to support the school.”

He went on to appeal to the school authorities to work tirelessly with counsellors to get kids affected by the unfortunate incident out of shock.

Headmaster of Accra Academy, Rev William Garr receiving the items on behalf of students thanked the team for their support. “We are very grateful and we didn’t expect this. On behalf of the parents, the students, the governing council, teachers and old boys of the school, we want to say we are very much pleased by the love you have shown to us.”

Rev Garr revealed that the incident was the first of its kind ever since the school was established and it really surprised authorities. But notwithstanding, the school authorities and students want to put the issue behind them and focus on their upcoming exam.

Speaking about the donation, Mr. Emmanuel Akrumah, Programs Manager at Happy FM said, “The Happy Morning Show team is doing this to change the meaning attached to media in Ghana. We are saying media is not just about reading news and having various discussions but also about using your on-air voice to make an impact. When we heard of the incident, we sent a reporter to cover it on Wednesday. Upon seeing the magnitude of the issues, we decided to contribute and lessen their plight. We at Happy 98.9FM are also appreciative of our listeners for pitching in towards this worthy cause.”

He also added that, “Schools are the second homes of our wards and as such, they need to be kept as safe as possible. We are all grateful no one was harmed at the time of the fire. Preventive measures should be put in place so that such an incident never repeats itself.”

Portions of Accra Academy near Kaneshie in Accra was gutted by fire on Wednesday. The fire which is said to have started at around 7pm engulfed parts of some dormitories – Alema and Halm Addo halls – while the students were in their classrooms during prep time destroying belongings of 51 students.
